Monthly outdoor adventure speaker series debuts May 17 at The Studio Boulder
BOULDER, Colo. – On May 17 Luis Benitez, an accomplished mountaineer and Gov. John Hickenlooper‘s right-hand man for the outdoor recreation industry, will share the stage with Jamie Logan, a transgender pioneer of modern rock climbing, to celebrate diversity in the outdoor industry.
The event is the kickoff to Rare Air Talks (RareAirTalks.com), a monthly speaking series co-hosted by The Studio Boulder and Boulder-based outdoor adventure podcast Dispatch Radio. Tickets for the kickoff event went on sale today with early-bird pricing through April 20.
“We’re proud to collaborate with Dispatch Radio and The Studio Boulder to convene an evening of community and storytelling around diversity and inclusion in the outdoors,” said Benitez, director of the Colorado Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry, the title sponsor for the event. “There is a desire among the outdoors community in Colorado, and across the country, to engage in meaningful dialogue on these and other issues. Rare Air Talks offers a fresh and engaging way to do that.”
Jamie Logan will share her story on stage for the first time since she transitioned to living as a woman. Logan, who is 71, pioneered modern rock climbing in the U.S., becoming the first to “free” such classic routes as The Diamond on Colorado’s Long’s Peak. Chris Weidner, a Boulder-based journalist, will interview her on stage about her biggest leap of faith yet and how the climbing community has responded to her new identity.
While tickets remain, a small group of audience members also can join a backstage dinner before the show with Benitez and Logan hosted by Real Athlete Diets (RAD). Starting at 8 p.m., an after-party at Upslope Brewing with a local jam band The Good Kind will benefit nonprofit partner Big City Mountaineers. For those who buy tickets by April 20, Upslope will provide a free beer at the after-party.
Len Necefer, creator of Natives Outdoors and a respected voice on tribal issues that intersect outdoor recreation, will introduce Benitez. Aisha Weinhold, founder of No Man’s Land Film Festival; Kriste Peoples, founder of the Black Women’s Alliance; and Elyse Rylander, founder of OUT There Adventures, also will join as a guest speakers.
“We’re excited to support our partners at Dispatch Radio in launching Rare Air Talks to convene a new type of conversation in the outdoors community, ” said Elizabeth O’Connell, publisher of Elevation Outdoors magazine, which joins public radio station KUNC as a media partner for the series. “It’s going to be raw, emotional and very fun.”
Each night, Dispatch Radio and The Studio Boulder seek to build a sense of community and share storytelling drawn from the outdoors.
“We’ve enjoyed a terrific collaboration with Dispatch Radio to bring a new type of conversation to the outdoors community,” said Rebecca Schwager, General Manager of The Studio Boulder. “We could not be more thrilled to take things to the next level with Rare Air Talks.”
